I'll be back with more feedbacks about this. I just used yum to install it. From what it all looks like, it looks pretty yummy to me! ;-)
Cheers.

Hi,

Thank you. Your suggestions make a lot of sense, and were already thought for the future.

Btw, Gnome Subtitles 0.3 might be available soon in the official Debian repositories.

Hi. Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone in the project.
It is really a great tool. I can't wait for version .2 being released for Ubuntu-debian distributions.

Could I please remind you of 2 important features I use the most?
1. Translator mode.
2. Autosave as .bak every # minutes (I autosave every 1 minute when I am translating subtitles).

Merci beaucoup à tous et toutes!

Hi, and thank you very much. It's always good to have some feedback. :-)

About the two problems you found, please report them here (the bugzilla). It won't take you much time and that way we can make sure things really get fixed.

Regarding the package dependency, the idea is not to oblige people to install MPlayer. There will be an option in the preferences to enable/disable the video auto-selection.

So thanks for your feedback, but please report these bugs in the bugzilla so they don't get lost. That would be really great.

Wow, this is great! This project has just made great progress, so I checked out this latest version. I used the Ubuntu .deb package to install and that went flawlessly. Although you might want to consider making a dependency for mplayer, since without it you keep getting a warning every time you open a file. The warning itself is good though; it alerts the user to the fact that mplayer is missing.

I did found two problems that you should know of;

(1) When I opened a file in a folder with a '-symbol in it, the app says "Please check that the video file is supported". This isn't a really big deal though, since people won't often have that symbol in a folder's name.

(2) The first time I open a file, it plays the accompanying video file flawlessly. This is absolutely great! However, after the first file, each second (and beyond) file you open gives you the error: "An unknown error has occured. Please report a bug and include this error name: System.InvalidOperationException".

In any case, great work on this new release and thank you for efforts!

Hi,

The encodings usage sure has space for improvement. Still, on the meanwhile, there are 2 workarounds:

Set the system locale to the encoding you're using in your files

Convert your files to Unicode using gedit, for example

Not ideal solutions but at least may allow you to get some work done.

I installed it with no problems, but it can not open subtitle files in "cp1251" encoding.
Please add support for this encoding too. My whole subtitles are in that encoding, so for now I can not use the program.

Hope this will be fixed with the next release.

Hi,

1) The Makefiles are generated when you run `./configure'. Only after running `./configure' can you use `make'. The README and INSTALL files contain installation instructions.

2) Besides SUSE Linux, only Fedora Core RPMs will be available soon. The spec file used for SUSE Linux is available on the SVN packages trunk (or more directly here: gnome-subtitles.suse10.spec). If you make RPMs for other distributions, please contact me again so i can put those RPMs on the website.

Hello!

1. There is missing Makefile file in gnome-subtitles-0.0.2.tar.gz (latest release tarball).
2. Are you going to prepare rpm's for other distributions? If not, it is possible to get gnome-subtitles.spec file to prepare that kind of rpm's?

Best regards,

Hi,

I'm not very informed (at all) about embedding subtitles into a video stream, though i thought there were programs that could do a good job on that. Just to be clear, your problem is on merging subtitles at correct times into an AVI and so has nothing to do with DVDs (as the avi being converted to DVD already includes subtitles) right?

About including it in Gnome Subtitles, i wouldn't say no if it can be done completely automatically (with no user intervention), through the use of external programs. Implementing it from root would take a lot of time and isn't a priority since it deviates from the objectives of Gnome Subtitles.

I'm the original poster of the first comment. Thanks for clearing things up.

By the way, do you plan to add a feature to embed subtitles into a video stream? I really wish there was a program to easily do it. I have an old DVD player, when I convert divx/xvid movies to the DVD-Video format, try as I might, I cannot get the subtitles to be displayed at correct times, if ever. A solution would be to "hardcode" the subtitles into the video. What do you think?

Hi Gour,

I agree with you on the choice of possibilities. About creating subtitles from scratch, that has been discussed a lot with some people on the mailing list, but the implementation didn't follow yet.

Basically, when movie previewing is implemented, you'll be able to select the start and end for a subtitle, click a button, and a new subtitle is created with those times. This is done till all times are set. At this time, since movie previewing isn't implemented yet, the creation of new subtitles is totally "blind". If you can create the timings with another program, then you'll be able to edit subtitles in Gnome Subtitles.
